Only one Summit County team survived through Week 12 of the OHSAA football tournament. Last-minute kick ends Twinsburg season
CANTON -- Jeremy Geier nailed a 40-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in regulation Saturday to give Massillon Washington a 10-7 win over Twinsburg in a Division I, Region 2 semifinal game at Canton's Fawcett Stadium. A timeout by Twinsburg coach Mark Solis failed to rattle the senior kicker. “The timeout gave me more time to make sure everything was set up straight," Geier said, "and I relaxed more than anything and it all worked out.” In a game that featured 720 yards of combined offense, neither team could consistently execute in the red zone as Massillon turned the ball over on a fumble and two interceptions and Twinsburg tossed two interceptions.   “We didn’t handle the pressure when we got into the red zone and we didn’t handle third down like we should have,” said Solis. “We didn’t do a good job of getting into the right play and I will take responsibility for that. At the end of the day we had to execute and do some better things to be successful.”   Twinsburg opened the scoring on a 38-yard catch and run from Andrew Collier to Dion Johnson, capping a five-play, 57-yard drive with 3:39 left in the first half. Poland scores 10 points in fourth quarter to top Hoban
HARTVILLE -- Poland Seminary scored 10 fourth-quarter points and came from behind to knock out Archbishop Hoban 10-7 in a Division III, Region 9 semifinal football game Friday night at Lake High School. "We just made too many mistakes in key situations and it really hurt us," Hoban coach Ralph Orsini lamented. "You go through 11 games and Game 12 with no blocked kicks, and the very last punt is blocked and that was kind of disheartening." With the scored tied 7-7 with 1:38 to play, Poland junior Anthony Machi came through and got a piece of Zach Christensen's punt. Copyright 2009 SportsInk. All rights reserved.

Royals rally, but lose state-title heartbreaker
COLUMBUS -- The result of the OHSAA Division III boys soccer championship Friday proved to be a test of everything Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy stands for. And the Royals passed with flying colors. Worthington Christian (18-1-4) won the title match 2-1 at Crew Stadium in the first overtime when CVCA freshman goalkeeper Nick Ciraldo was unable to corral a routine ball. It was a crushing loss for the Royals (16-1-5), who offered no excuses, placed no blame, and were attempting to become the first undefeated state championship squad in school history. Asked what he said to Ciraldo after the match, first-year coach Jon Taylor replied: "I love you." Many figured CVCA would be in a rebuilding mode in 2009, graduating 22 seniors, including nine starters, from its 2008 Division II state runner-up team. Copyright 2009 SportsInk.
