Highland drops tight decision to Warren Howland
WARREN -- The Howland Tigers defeated the Highland Hornets 28-21 in a OHSAA Division II regional quarterfinal game Friday night at Richard Lombardo Stadium. The game, however, was an afterthought to the concern that weighed on everyone’s mind.   Highland senior special teamer Kory Wiita remains hospitalized with no feeling below his chest after suffering an injury in the season finale last week against Cloverleaf. Archbishop Hoban victory over Padua is "special"
AKRON -- Archbishop Hoban's football team had nine penalties and two turnovers and sputtered with just 117 yards of offense on Friday night, but its special teams play was outstanding and paved the way for a 14-11 playoff win over visiting Parma Padua. Xavier Kirksey-Ivery returned one kickoff to the Padua 5-yard line to set up Hoban's first score, and returned the opening kickoff of the second half 95 yards for their second TD. It would be all the Knights needed to advance to the second round of the OHSAA Division II state playoffs. Padua was held to 71 yards rushing by a rugged defensive performance from the Knights. "Our special teams were good the first time we played them, and again here, thank goodness for our kickoff return team tonight," said Hoban coach Ralph Orsini. Orsini changed quarterbacks at halftime, moving in senior David Bott over Dan Hinton. "Dan was in an accident on Sunday and just looked out of it, was not his typical self, and Bott responded well" explained Orsini. Padua scored their touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass to James Flowers. Hoban will now take on Poland next Friday night in the state round of 16.. Copyright 2009 SportsInk. Hubbard controls second half in win over Buckeye
HUBBARD -- Five turnovers proved to be the downfall for Buckeye's football team in the first round of the OHSAA state football playoffs. Hubbard quarterback Matt Shelton passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more as the Eagles parlayed Buckeye's giveaways into a 30-14 victory on Friday night, moving the Eagles into the round of 16 in Division III. "There are two cardinal sins that you can't make: turnovers and penalties," Bucks coach Billy Burke said. Unfortunately, Buckeye committed both of them against its higher-seeded host. With the score tied at 14-14 in the second quarter, the Bucks had a 70-yard touchdown called back because of a holding penalty. Copyright 2009 SportsInk. All rights reserved.

Several Akron City Series seniors are on the recruiting radar. This was the year of the running backs in the City Series, and college scouts, as well as fans, took notice.
