Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said “Colt McCoy knows how to win games”.  And that’s exactly what the second year quarterback did in leading the Browns to a 17-16 win over the Miami Dolphins Sunday afternoon at Browns Stadium.

McCoy led the Browns on a two-minute drive that led to the game-winning touchdown.  McCoy hit wide receiver Mohammed Massaquoi with a leaping grab in along the sidelines from 14 yards to tie the score at 16.  Phil Dawson added the extra point to give the Browns a one-point lead. 

Miami had a chance in the final 43 seconds.  Thanks to two Browns penalties, the Dolphins took over at the Cleveland 47.  Chad Henne misfired on three passes.  His fourth down throw to Brandon Marshall was picked off by Browns safety Mike Adams to end the threat. 

After the game, Shurmur was asked if he had any words for McCoy before the final drive.  Shurmur told the quarterback.  “Get in the end zone.  Get us in the end zone”. 

The Browns began the drive on their own 20 with 3:23 to go.  McCoy hit five straight passes to get the offense to the Miami 43 yard line.  Passes to Benjamin Watson and Montario Hardesty got the Browns to the Miami 27.  Then, a costly offside on Miami on a third and 10 gave the Browns another chance.  A pass to Evan Moore gave the Browns a first down at the 14 setting up Massaquoi’s heroics. 

After the game, Shurmur said ‘what I was proudest of is when it wasn’t pretty, and at times it was very ugly, they hung in there and competed.  Because you don’t know.  I’m excited for those guys in that locker room because we have two victories in week three”.

Miami got on the scoreboard in the first quarter.  Following an interception of a Colt McCoy pass by Jimmy Wilson at the Browns 43 yard line, the Dolphins began a four-play drive that got them into the end zone. Danny Thomas took a screen pass from quarterback Chad Henne and went into the end zone untouched to give Miami a 7-0 lead.

The Browns got their first touchdown in the second quarter.  On a first down play from the Miami 33, Colt McCoy rolled out of the pocket and found Josh Cribbs in the right corner of the end zone.  The pass was a little high, but Cribbs went up and got it over Miami cornerback Sean Smith for the touchdown.  That tied the game at 7.

The Dolphins completed the first half scoring with 30 seconds to go in the second quarter.  Dan Carpenter completed an 11-play 75-yard drive with a 23-yard field goal.  That allowed Miami to go into the locker room with a 10-7 lead. 

Cleveland got the offense going on the opening drive in the second half.  In seven plays, the Browns moved from their 20 yard line to the Miami 12.  But, the drive stalled out.  Phil Dawson came on to boot a 30-yard field goal to tie the game at 10.

Miami added field goals from Carpenter of 41 and 38 yards to give the Dolphins a 16-10 lead.

The Browns are back at Cleveland Browns Stadium next Sunday to take on the Tennessee Titans.

The 9th annual Akron Marathon has wrapped up for another year.

The event has grown from 3.000 runners in 2003 to over 14,000 runners this year. Runners from Northeast Ohio and across the country participated in this year's Marathon, Half-Marathon, Team relay and kids races.

Fans lined the sidewalks in Downtown Akron to see the runners pass on Broadway, South High and Main Streets. Bands from Ellet, Garfield, St. Vincent-St. Mary High Schools urged runners on, singers from Kenmore were on hand, along with a gentleman in the Firestone Park area who kept playing 'Charge" on his trumpet.

Inside Canal Park, the atmosphere was like a college football game was being played. The seats were filled with fans greeting the runners as they entered the stadium. Plus a live band kept the energy level at a fever pitch.

Robert Lisy of Macedonia finished the Marathon in a time of 3 hours 18 minutes. He said he enjoys running the Marathon course.

The Men's Marathon was won by Peter Kemboi of Kenya, now training in Hebron, Kentucky in a time of 2 Hours 22 minutes. David Petrak of Cuyahoga Falls was second in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The Women's Marathon was won by Becki Michael of Akron in a time of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

It was the “Jack Snowball Show” at Art Wright Stadium Friday night as the Wadsworth Grizzlies defeated the Revere Minutemen 42-0.

Snowball had a hand in the first four touchdowns scored by the Grizzlies. The senior tailback ran for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth on a halfback option.

“We knew we had to have a good week this week”, said Wadsworth head coach Greg Dennison.  “And we did”.

Wadsworth improved their record to 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in the Suburban League.  Revere is still looking for their first win.  The Minutemen, dealing with al kinds of injuries, are 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Suburban League.

Snowball got Wadsworth on the scoreboard in the first quarter.  The Grizzlies took possession at their own 42 yard line following a punt.  Snowball showed off his passing arm as he took a pitch from quarterback Jon Kuss. Snowball pulled up on the sweep and found Mitch Gordon on a crossing pattern at the 20 yard line.  Gordon shook off a tackler and went into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Dennison was impressed with Snowball’s passing arm.  “Jack can do a little bit of everything.  Gordon wasn’t real open, he had to lay it in there and he did”.

Following a three-and-out by the Minutemen, Wadsworth was at it again.  An 11-play, 50-yard drive ended with Snowball scoring on fourth down from two yards out.  Snowball carried the ball on seven of the eleven plays.  The extra point by Luis Escudero made it 14-0 Wadsworth.

On their next possession, Snowball took the handoff from Kuss on an off-tackle play.  The tailback turned the play up the field and ran past Revere safety Justin Bergh for as 73-yard touchdown run. The extra point made it 21-0.

The Wadsworth defense forced a third-straight three-and-out and took possession at the Revere 40.  Snowball carries the ball three times in the five-play drive including the last four for his third touchdown of the quarter for a 28-0 Wadsworth lead. 

In the first half, Snowball carried the ball 13 times for 139 yards and had 42 yards in passing.

“My running comes down to the line.  It really does.  Everything goes through them.  They blocked that 73 yard run to perfection”.

Wadsworth completed the four touchdown outburst in the second quarter with 10 seconds remaining in the first half on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Kuss to junior tight end Nick Seme.

Wadsworth erased all doubt about the outcome on the first series of downs in the third quarter.  With Snowball on the sidelines, the Grizzlies went 75 yards in 11 plays for their sixth touchdown of the game. Jon Kuss on a quarterback sweep went 32 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-0.

The only thing Snowball wasn’t successful with last night was being voted Homecoming King.  “I don’t want to talk about it” Snowball said with a smile.

Lodi Police looking for a man who robbed the First Merit branch on Wooster Street yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses told Lodi Police that a white male entered the bank, told the teller that he had a gun and demanded money.

After getting the cash, the robber left the bank and got into a light blue Saturn driven by another individual. Witnesses told police that the dye pack was activated as it traveled north on Church Street.

Lodi Police told NewsChannel 5 that the suspect is described as a white male, 5-foot-3, weighting 120 pounds, wearing a cream colored, long-sleeved shirt and a dark-colored baseball cap.

Freshman Braxton Miller will start when Ohio State hosts Colorado on Saturday.

The decision was announced by interim coach Luke Fickell on Thursday on his weekly radio call-in show heard on 1590 WAKR.

Fifth-year senior Joe Bauserman had started the first three games for the Buckeyes (2-1), but the passing game __ with Bausermanand Miller splitting time __ suffered in Saturday night's 24-6 loss at Miami. They combined to hit just 4 of 18 passes for 35 yards with an interception (by Miller), with all four completions going to running backs.

Fickell said he hoped the change might energize the offense. He said he felt Miller could handle the pressure, and that his running ability would be a big asset.

St. Vincent-St. Mary is putting their 4-0 record on the line tonight when they play the Archbishop Hoban Knights at InfoCision Stadium.

It's anticipated that between 10,000 and 12,000 fans are expected to attend the rivalry game.

St. Vincent-St. Mary head coach Dan Boarman says even though Hoban has an 0-4 record, it will be a tough game between the two rivals.

Hoban says the development of his offensive line is allowing his skill position players the ability to get free and score points.

To open Mid-American Conference play, The University of Akron volleyball team mounted a thrilling comeback after dropping the first two sets to Buffalo, but the Zips (3-11, 0-1 MAC) came up just short in the final frame to lose 3-2 (19-25, 17-25, 28-26, 25-19, 10-15). With the win, the Bulls improve to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the league.

The first two sets were controlled by UB, as the Bulls hit .378 and .310, respectively, while Akron’s offense sputtered. In a tight third set that featured 15 tie scores, the Zips turned it around and found a way to win after fighting off match point, down 24-22, and pulled off a 28-26 victory to send it to a fourth set.

UA used its momentum to race out to an 11-3 lead to take charge of the set, but Buffalo climbed all the way back to get within three at 22-19. Akron answered by slamming the door with three straight points to even the match and send it to the fifth.

The final set was tied at 9-9 until the Bulls took two points in a row and gained the upper hand. UA countered with a kill to make it 11-10, but the comeback ended there, as UB notched four consecutive kills to claim the match.

Senior Courtney Jarvis led the Zips with 15 kills on the night and also added 11 digs. Sophomore Alex Cocklin reached double figures with 11 kills, and freshman Mary Delich chipped in eight kills and two block assists. Back in the lineup at setter, Morgan Kuhn tallied 38 assists, two kills, nine digs, two block assists and a pair of service aces for a strong all-around performance. Starting libero Jill Paluch finished with 17 digs, while Christina Furda added 12.

The Zips return to the JAR on Saturday, Sept. 24, against Ball State. The match begins at 5 p.m. and will be Youth Day, where kids in attendance will be able to make signs to support the team.

The Cleveland Indians will pay tribute Saturday night to radio broadcaster Mike Hegan prior to the second game of the Doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins.

Hegan, who is celebrating his 50th anniversary in professional baseball, will begin a transition following this season from his full-time broadcasting duties. He will continue to impact the Indians organization by joining the Indians Alumni Ambassador program, serving as a resource for Indians broadcasting, community and business initiatives.

The son of former Indians great Jim Hegan, Mike grew up in Cleveland and starred at St. Ignatius High School in both football and baseball. He spent a year on scholarship for both sports at Holy Cross before signing with the New York Yankees in 1961. His career, which began in 1962, was highlighted by 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, including an American League All-Star selection in 1969 and as a member of the 1972 World Champion Oakland Athletics.

When his playing career came to an end following the summer of 1977, he immediately moved into the Milwaukee Brewers TV booth as an analyst where he spent the next 11 seasons. In 1989, he moved back home to Cleveland and has spent the past 23 seasons broadcasting Indians baseball, both in the TV and Radio booths.

He was recently nominated along with Herb Score for the 2012 Ford C. Frick award for excellence in Major League Baseball broadcasting. Fans can take part in online voting for the award until 5PM ET on September 30 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/baseballhall). A 20-member electorate will vote this fall on the final 10-name ballot to determine the 2012 recipient.

St. Vincent-St. Mary has a young man who is a star on both the soccer field and the gridiron. To show you how well known Antonio Manfut and the Fighting Irish Boys Soccer team is, LeBron James was in the stands to see him on the pitch Thursday night against Medina.

Fighting Irish head soccer coach John Stavros said he feels very fortunate to have Antonio on the team, even though he has to share him with the football team.

Manfut says he can remember back to when he was 6 and 7 years old when he was playing on two youth soccer teams.

Asdrubal Cabrera drove in five runs and Jeanmar Gomez won his fifth straight start for Cleveland as the Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 11-2 on Thursday night to remain in second place in the AL Central.

Gomez (5-2) gave up one earned run and four hits over six innings. Since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Aug. 30, the right-hander is 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

Cabrera hit a three-run homer and tied his career-high for RBIs. Kosuke Fukudome added three RBIs and Travis Hafner singled for his 1,000th career hit as Cleveland moved 1.5 games ahead of the White Sox.

Fukudome's two-out, two-run single off Philip Humber (9-9) in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie.

Fukudome and Jason Kipnis hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the first inning. That's the first time in 40-years that the Tribe started the game with back-to-back home runs. Graig Nettles and Vada Pinson turned the trick back in 1971.

Tonight, the Indians play the Minnesota Twins in the start of a four-game series. First pitch is at 7:05. Before the game, the Indians will honor Jim Thome.
