Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) -- Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is calling for tougher sanctions against players who violate the league’s drug policy.

Selig, speaking at a news conference Saturday, cited the suspension last season of All-Star MVP Melky Cabrera and a recent report in the Miami New Times alleging several players obtaining illegal performance enhancers from a South Florida clinic, as evidence for stricter penalties.

“I can’t tell you how pleased I am to see many players speaking out recently about how much they care,” Selig said of the players’ desire for a clean game.

Players who initial violate baseball's drug policy receive a 50 game suspension, followed by 100 games for a second offense and a lifetime ban for a third.

In January, the league and the union agreed to randomly blood test players for human growth hormone during the regular season.
