AUDIO Indians Officially Have New Manager 10/26/2009 5:17:12 PM | Joe Jastrzemski, AkronNewsNow.com Mark Shapiro calls him an "elite communicator." He calls himself a sore loser, one who hates to lose at tic-tac-toe. Manny Acta agreed to become the 40th manager of the Cleveland Indians on Monday. ![]() Manny Acta talks with Tribe fans after his being named as the 40th manager of the Indians. advertisement Acta agreed to a three-year contract with the Tribe, with a club option for the 2013 season. For the past two-and-a-half years, Acta was the manager of the Washington Nationals compiling a record of 158-252. On July 13, Acta was dismissed from the Nationals job. He then spent the next few months watching cable television watching major league games of the other 29 teams in the major leagues. Acta zoned in on teams he thought might be changing managers at the end of the season. Acta was also up for the Houston Astros job, an organization that he began his baseball playing career with in 1986. Late last week, Acta decided that the Indians managerial job was best for him.
Optimistic about the future of the Indians is how Acta describes the situation with the Tribe. "We need to get guys healthy. Get Grady healthy. Get Hafner healthy. Get Jake back in the rotation. If we can get our starting rotation in order, we can get things around." What Acta knows a lot about already is Cleveland is a passionate city. "The 455 straight sellouts tell me about the passion of the fans." Indians Executive Vice-President and General Manager Mark Shapiro said "we are very at excited to have Manny Acta as our manager. After speaking with an impressive array of candidates, we feel Manny is a very strong and experienced leader who possesses energy and enthusiasm." Acta went on to say, "I'm excited to be part of the Cleveland Indians family. I look forward to working with this talented group of young men who seem to possess a lot of passion and energy for their work." Content © AkronNewsNow.com. All rights reserved.
