AUDIO Indians Interview Acta For Managers' Job
 10/20/2009 4:36:00 PM  |  Joe Jastrzemski, AkronNewsNow.com

The Cleveland Indians have begun the process of interviewing the final candidates who want to be manager of the team in 2010.

Former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta spent Tuesday morning and afternoon meeting with Indians officials and the media at Progressive Field.  Acta described himself as "˜a common sense' manager.

Acta believes the most important attribute as a manager is "˜communication with players and people.'  He said "˜Frank Robinson, Bobby Cox and Tony LaRussa were the most important influences on him as a manager."

Acta is also a candidate for the vacant Houston Astros Managerial post.  The 40-year old Acta managed two-and-a-half seasons with the Nationals, compiling a record of 158-252.

The Nationals are very similar to the Indians in that their rosters were filled with young, talented players.  But, Acta said "˜there are more pieces in place in Cleveland.'

Acta says his goal is to be a manager in the big leagues for '25 or 30 years.'

Other managerial candidates are scheduled to come into Cleveland in the next few days for interviews.

Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro said "˜Torey Luvollo will interview before the end of the week.'  Luvollo managed the Indians Triple-A affiliate in Columbus this past season.  Previously, Luvollo managed the Akron Aeros, the Indians Double-A affiliate for two seasons, winning the Eastern League Championship in 2005.

Among the other candidates to be interviewed include Bobby Valentine.  Shapiro said the Indians "˜are working around his post-season obligations with ESPN.'  Shapiro said there is one other finalist who will be coming in "˜but we are working around some obligations that he has.'

Plus, Shapiro said they are currently vetting two other candidates who may or may not be brought in for interviews.

Two candidates who will not be coming in for final interviews are former Indians manager Mike Hargrove and former Indians third basemen and current manager of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Travis Fryman.
