West Nile Virus Found In Stark County

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed that there is a mosquito pool in Canton that has tested positive for West Nile Virus. The positive tests results in June came from mosquitoes collected in the Arboretum Park area and is the first one of its kind.

The Canton Health Department currently has a program in place that increases spraying and the treatment of standing water in effected areas.

In anticipation, the city already identified this area and took the necessary precautions three weeks ago to deal with the mosquito population. Subsequent testing since then has shown a dramatic decrease in the number of mosquitos collected.

There have been no positive reports of West Nile infecting anyone in Stark County this year.

Residents are still advised to wear long sleeves, pants and light colors when outside in the evenings or out in wooded areas where mosquito population may be higher. Experts also recommend using mosquito repellant when appropriate.

Solo Stark County Crash Kills Driver

The Canton post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking into a one car crash Saturday afternoon that killed the vehicle's driver.

The patrol says it happened at about 2 PM Saturday on Mottice Drive in Sandy Township, Stark County.

Troopers say 57 year-old Gary Bovie of New Philadelphia was driving a minivan eastbound on Mottice Drive when his vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and went off the side of the road.

It then struck a utility pole and overturned.  Bovie wasn't wearing a safety belt and was ejected from the minivan.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say the driver's side door showed signs it may not have been able to be properly latched when closed, and that may be a factor in Bovie's ejection from the car.

The crash is still under investigation.
