A Summit County jury has decided that the University of Akron must pay the owners of the Sun Grill and a neighboring parking lot more than $3 million for their land.

The verdict came down late this afternoon, the result of one of the last remaining eminent domain cases the University filed against property owners to acquire land to build a complex of dormitories adjacent to the new stadium that is under construction.

Jurors were asked to decide a fair market value for two pieces of property: a cluster of parcels owned by Joseph and Mona Nemer that includes the Sun Grill, several adjoining businesses and student apartments; and an adjacent parking lot jointly owned by Joseph and Mona Nemer and by Manuel and Collette Nemer, who also own the nearby Manny's Pub, Aroma coffee shop and Chopstix restaurant.

The University's last offer was $1.180 million for the Sun Grill properties, and $175,000 for the parking lot. The jury awarded $2.107 million for the Sun Grill properties, and just more than $1 million for the parking lot.

The trial began on Wednesday, May 28, but testimony did not get underway until Friday. The jurors deliberated just under two hours today before reaching their verdict.
