University of Akron President Luis Proenza sent letters this week to faculty and staff on campus asking them to think twice about signing cards from the Communications Workers of America indicating they want the union to be their collective bargaining agent.
Proenza told employees in the letter that while he recognized and endorsed the right of each employee to make a free and informed decision regarding whether or not to unionize, he didn't believe that unionization of employees was in the best interest of employees and the university.
Proenza wrote " I do not believe that collective bargaining will be the all-encompassing solution that union organizers would have our staff employees believe. Unionization will not resolve the fiscal challenges currently facing our University and higher education in Ohio. It also will not remedy the challenges we face as the result of the current state, national and international economic situation. Indeed, there simply is no logical basis to expect that collective bargaining can generate increased resources or otherwise redress our shared financial concerns. "
