(GasBuddy.com) Average retail gasoline prices in Akron have fallen 10.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.52/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 372 gas outlets in Akron. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.49/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Akron during the past week, prices yesterday were 19.8 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 4.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 32.2 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

"The party at the pump with the seasonally lower prices may be temporarily over," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "We've seen situations unfold that have caused a reversal in the downward trend, and those situations are multiplying across portions of the U.S. and Canada. Along the West Coast, supply has grown tight and will lead to likely increases, and in the Great Lakes prices may spike 10-20c/gallon in the next two days in over a half dozen states as a result of a similar situation. Refineries are finishing what was an extensive maintenance season and with plant restarts commencing, problems may develop, putting pressure on prices," DeHaan said.

"And while the national average hasn't seen much movement, some areas of the country have seen volatility continue, mainly in the Great Lakes states where prices may again be poised to rise in the next couple of days as wholesale prices reverberate as refineries continue their maintenance schedules and the progressive switch over to summer gasoline continues," DeHaan said.

AUDIO Gas Prices: Can You Say $4.00?

The price of gasoline is going up.  In some cases, it's already there.  Gasbuddy.com shows some gas stations in the Akron area asking $3.99 a gallon.  Many others have increased a dime to $3.95 just since this morning.  Patrick DeHaan with Gasbuddy.com says it actually started Monday with a 32-cent hike to retailers.

"We saw the largest single-day increase in wholesale gasoline prices in a year," said Patrick DeHaan with gasbuddy.

DeHaan says some oil drilling operations and refineries in the Gulf have shut down as soon-to-be Hurricane Isaac continues to churn through the Gulf of Mexico.  The shutdowns have created a smaller supply to meet steady demand.

DeHaan predicts that drivers in Indiana and Michigan and possibly Ohio will pay a little more than $4.00 a gallon by the weekend.

Ohioans will notice slightly higher gas prices from a week ago.

AAA Auto Club reports the average price for a gallon of regular is about $3.66-- up 3 cents from a week ago.

"With Memorial Day a week away, it's time to put to bed an old myth that gasoline prices rise ahead of a major holiday," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan, in a press release.

As of Monday morning, GasBuddy.dot.com shows prices in Akron near $3.55 and $3.58 in Canton.

Including the change in gas prices in Akron during the past week, prices yesterday were 10.2 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 4.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 15.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 13.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

"With Memorial Day a week away, it's time to put to bed an old myth that gasoline prices rise ahead of a major holiday," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "Average gasoline prices will likely continue to decline in the days ahead of Memorial Day, but folks will still say come next year that prices went up over the weekend this year. It's a sign of how sensitive motorists become to gasoline prices around the holidays, nothing more, and most of the time, the myth isn't true. This year will be one of those years- unless you're on the West Coast, prices have been slowly coming down," DeHaan said.

Akron Gas Prices Drop

If you thought prices at the pump seemed lower lately-- you were right.

Average retail gas prices in Akron dipped 10.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.56 a gallon as of Sunday.

The national average dropped 3.3 cents a gallon last week according to AkronGasPrices.com.

"While gasoline prices east of the Rockies have been falling, the West Coast remains at the mercy of refinery production," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan in a press release.

As the Memorial Day weekend inches closer, DeHann says motorists on the West Coast are watching and waiting to see how much they'll pay to fill up.

"The entire West Coast right now is looking for any reason for a continuation in the price rally we've seen in the last week as supply remains tight, and stakes high as Memorial Day weekend is just two weeks away. While pump prices may continue their decline outside the West Coast, any refinery blip certainly has the potential for localized hotspots, and motorists should be aware of that," DeHaan said.

Gas Prices Up From Last Week

Akron area motorists will start the New Year paying more at the pump.

Gas prices in Akron have risen 6.3 cents for a gallon of regular, bringing the average price to $3.37. Gas prices website AkronGasPrices.com reports the average last week was $3.35.

"Average gasoline prices are moving up as we enter the New Year, a trend that has held since 2008," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan, in a press release.

"The biggest problem with that trend holding true this year is that we're starting 2012 about 20-cents per gallon higher than 2011, breaking yet another high price record and setting up an ugly year for motorists," DeHaan said.

Early Holiday Present For Akron Motorists

With just one week left before the holidays, Akron gas prices have dropped over a dime per gallon averaging about $3.18.

GasBuddy.com says the price was nearly 25 cents cheaper. The national average remains higher than local prices only dropping a little over 4 cents per gallon in the last week bringing the total to $3.23.

While some may be happy with the falling prices, Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick Dehann reminds motorists that the prices will still set record highs this Christmas across much of America.

Press Release - GasBuddy.com

Average retail gasoline prices in Akron have fallen 10.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.18/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 4.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.23/g, according to gasoline price website AkronGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Akron during the past week, prices yesterday were 24.7 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 7.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 26.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

"Gas prices across much of the nation continue their downward move, bringing the national average for a gallon down to its lowest level since late February," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "While some motorists are thinking these falling gasoline prices are nice, I'll unpleasantly remind them that gasoline prices will still set record highs this Christmas across much of America- motorists have never seen average prices this high on Christmas. As prices typically reach a low point during early winter, this sets up a troubling start to 2012 in terms of gasoline prices. Summer gasoline prices typically are 80-120 cents per gallon higher than where prices stand around Christmas," DeHaan said.
