Hundreds of kids are ready to let gravity do its job at Derby Downs. The FirstEnergy All American Soap Box Derby gets underway Saturday morning. Derby President & CEO Joe Mazur says it's been quite a week already.
"These kids are excited," said Mazur. "This is the world championship of gravity racing. They come in and they spend a week with us here in Akron. And our job here at the derby is to make sure that, basically, it's Disney World.
Mazur says that other than the preliminary races that qualified people for the big race in Akron, the derby represents something non-tangible.
"This is a family type of sport, where dad and mom are right there with the kids all day, every day and it's really a wholesome sport."
Saturday's main event actually follows several days worth preliminary races and other activities for the racers and their families.
There are more than 500 racers from all over the United States, plus some from Canada, Japan and New Zealand.
