Ariel Castro pleaded not guilty this morning to nearly a thousand counts related to the kidnapping of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight.
During the arraignment, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Pamela Barker told Castro to pick his head up. It's the first time Castro has raised his head during his court proceedings. After he raised his head, he closed his eyes. Barker would have none of it, ordering Castro to open his eyes and look at her so she knew he was paying attention.
The 977 charges include two counts of aggravated murder, 512 counts of kidnapping, and 446 counts of rape. The new indictment expands the charges filed earlier against Castro and extends the charges all the way back to the beginning of the women's ordeal.
Barker continued Castro's $8 million bond and the no-contact order he has with the victims.
Castro waived the reading of all the charges, but Barker read a condensed version for the record.
