A former teaching assistant with the Akron Public Schools will be serving the rest of his life in prison with parole eligibility after serving 10 years according to Summit County Prosecutors.
40-year-old D’Juan Shabazz Shields received the sentence Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to raping a child under 13 and four counts of gross sexual imposition in the middle of his trial.
Shields was labelled a Tier III sex offender, which means he will have to register his address every 90 days for the rest of his life.
Prosecutors said Shields raped and sexually assaulted two young girls in 2011 and 2012 while he worked as a teacher’s assistant at Hyre Middle School.
Neither victim was a student at the school according to prosecutors.
