A nine year-old Stark County boy was shot to death, apparently when he was looking at a loaded gun with an older relative.
The Stark County Sheriff's Office says it happened late Friday afternoon at a home on Maplelane St. SE in Minerva
Stark County Sheriff George Maier tells the Canton Repository that it's believed the shooting of nine-year old Matthew Schrekengaust of Canton was accidental. Maier says the boy and his 14 year-old cousin didn't know the gun was loaded.
Matthew was taken to Aultman Hospital. Sheriff's deputies were told he died of a gunshot wound.
The gun belonged to the cousin's father. The investigation continues, including a determination on whether the gun was locked up.
