The Akron School Board has voted to fire Buchtel Community Learning Center teacher Melissa Cairns for posting a picture of her students with duct tape on their mouths on her Facebook page. Under the picture was the caption "Finally found a way to get them to be quiet."
Cairns later admitted her decision was "stupid," but she posted it as a joke at the time after one of her students had asked for the duct tape to fix a binder, and the playfully placed it over her mouth. about eight or nine other students in the class of 15 students then joined in, and then put the duct tape over their mouths.
Akron Public Schools Communications Director Mark Williamson said she showed a lack of good judgement and that her conduct was unbecoming of a teacher.
Williamson told AkronNewsNow " The students and their parents were highly upset about this during the hearing process, and expressed that in no uncertain terms. This was not something that was innocous, it was not something that was to be laughed off."
Cairns posted the picture in October . It was later taken down at the request of Buchtel principal Sonya Gordon.
Cairns was teaching seventh and eighth graders math at the Buchtel Community Learning Center at the time.
Melissa Cairns had been on paid leave since January.
