St. Vincent-St. Mary High School's most famous alumnus is fixing up his old school's gym.
LeBron James and his LeBron James Family Foundation are giving St. V a million dollars for a total makeover of the school's gym...it'll be gutted to make way for what'll be called the LeBron James Arena.
St. Vincent-St. Mary school president Tom Carone describes some of the amenities.
"New bleachers, a new floor, new baskets, heating and cooling, lights, scoreboard," Carone tells AkronNewsNow.com. "It's gonna be pretty exciting."
The court in the new gym will be regulation sized. The old floor built in the 1950s is short on each end.
"The current gym, built in 1958, so you can imagine...I believe the court length is 84 feet," Carone says. "Our new court will be legal size, 94 feet."
Carone says the Miami Heat star hasn't forgotten his alma mater.
"Anytime he's in town he tries to get by, and he loves to practice in the gym and just to see teachers and acquaintances," Carone tells AkronNewsNow.com. "It's just good to have him back any time he's in town."
St. Vincent-St. Mary hopes to have the new gym open by the start of the 2013-2014 basketball season this fall.
