In a press conference Thursday afternoon, New Franklin Police Detective Michael Hitchings called the incident a "horrific crime."
"We never know what's going on through anyone's head when they do something like this, " said Hitchings.
Police say Ford used a sledgehammer to kill the couple. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office says the Schobert's died from blunt impacts to the head.
Detective Hitchings says both New Franklin Police and the Akron Police Dept. are working together to solve the case, which remains under investigation.
Jeffery and Margaret Schobert were found bludgeoned to death inside their Rex Lake Drive home. New Franklin Police say the suspect knew the couple because he was dating their daughter, 18-year old Chelsea Schobert.
Hitchings said Ford is currently in the Portage County Jail on unrelated charges.
