A 51-year old Tallmadge woman has been sentenced to prison for causing a wrong-way crash on I-76 September 6th that killed an Akron firefighter's wife.
Summit County Judge Lynne Callahan sentenced Phyllis J. Treich, 51, to a mandatory seven years in prison and a lifetime license suspension.
Treich drove onto I-76 driving west into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes, hitting a car driven by Karon Briggs. That car was sent into another lane and hit by a second car. Briggs, a 55-year-old mother of three, died in surgery after the crash. Treich was not injured. Tests showed Treich’s blood alcohol content to be 0.181, well over the legal limit. Treich pleaded guilty to Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, Operating Under the Influence, and three counts of Negligent Assault, on February 15th.
