What started as a police chase late this morning in Akron ended in the driver of the stolen car crashing the vehicle after cops called off the chase .
Around 11:40 this morning, an officer responded to a call to check for a stolen car in the area of Copley Road and Orlando Avenue. At the same time an unmarked police car spotted the vehicle near Andrew Street and White Avenue. When the marked cruiser attempted a traffic stop, the driver led officers on a chase. The chase was canceled within a minute due to the speeds involved.
Officers then located the vehicle in the 500 block of Diagonal Road, after it was involved in an accident. The driver apparently lost control on a curve, struck the curb, rock wall and then a tree. The driver was transported to Akron General Medical Center where his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
The vehicle, a 2001 Buick Lesabre, was not reported stolen at the time of the crash. The vehicle owner is from Brunswick, Ohio.
The driver has been identified as Lee Porter, 43, of South Walnut Street in Akron. Porter was charged with failure to comply with police orders, receiving stolen property (car), possession of marijuana, open container, driving under suspension, failure to control and not wearing a seat belt. He also had additional outstanding warrants for theft, a noise complaint and open container.
