UPDATED 1:16 p.m. to include ID of the driver killed in the early morning crash
A driver was thrown from their van and killed after crashing on the embankment at the Kelly Avenue - East Market Street overpass early this morning.
Akron police say the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed on East Market Street, when he lost control and struck a pole around 1:00 a.m. The van went airborne about 70 feet, crossing four lanes of traffic on the East Market Street Bridge, before landed over an embankment on Kelly Avenue.
The Summit County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Michael Lloyd, 34, of Shawnee Path in Akron. Cause of death was severe head trauma.
Lloyd was partially ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
