Fewer Ohio prison inmates are going back to prison than ever.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says the current rate is a record low, with only 28 percent of inmates returning to prison after they're released.

That's down from 31 percent in Ohio, and well under the national average of 43 percent.

Ohio DRC director Gary Mohr tells AkronNewsNow that one reason the "recidivism" rate has dropped...is that released prisoners likely to reoffend, get help to try to prevent that.

Mohr says there are "reentry coalitions" in Ohio communities. They are groups of people and communities help transition released inmates into the outside world in a safe manner.
