Tallmadge Woman Pleads Guilty to Vehicular Homicide

A 51-year old Tallmadge woman has pleaded gulty to charges in connection with the death of an Akron woman in a wrong way crash on the Akron expressway.

Phyllis J. Treich pleaded guilty to a felony charge of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and misdemeanor counts of Operating Under the Influence and three counts of Negligent Assault.

On the evening of September 6, Treich drove onto I-76 west into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes. She drove for close to one mile before hitting a car driven by Karon Briggs. That car was sent into another lane and hit by a second car. Briggs, a 55-year-old mother of three and wife of an Akron firefighter, died in surgery after the crash.

Treich and the three occupants of the second car that hit Briggs were uninjured.

Blood tests at Akron General Hospital showed Treich’s blood serum alcohol content to be 0.181, over the legal limit of 0.08.

Summit County Judge Lynne Callahan will sentence Treich on at 1:30 p.m. on April 3.
