The venerable Rubber Bowl will have a new owner and a new future.
The University of Akron Board of Trustees Wednesday voted to sell the historic venue to Team 1 Properties LLC for $38,000. The group plans on spending millions to refurbish the Rubber Bowl and bring a USFL pro football franchise to the city.
University of Akron Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities Management Ted Curtis tells AkronNews Now ". They are going to improve it to what extent I do not know, but there are many situations that have to be improved to even make it presentable. It seems like a conscientious group that wants to do some good things, so I have a good feeling about the whole package."
Curtis says the University isn't losing any money on the sale since it bought the Rubber Bowl for only a dollar from the city of Akron in 1971.
Team I Properties will have to buy any land for parking and concessions surrounding the Rubber Bowl from the city of Akron.
Ted Curtis is hoping the Rubber Bowl can be restored to its former glory. "It was a great place. I played football in high school there. It was a good facility and I have a feeling they're going to turn it into a good porgram," says Curtis.
