The football program at Akron's Buchtel High School has scored a different kind of touchdown.
That's because an anonymous donor will spend some $10,000 on a new scoreboard at Buchtel's stadium.
Akron Public School board members accepted the gift at Monday night's meeting.
Board member James Hardy, who spearheaded a recent report on upgrading or fixing school athletic facilities, says it's a welcome gift.
"We really need community members, businesses, friends to step up and help when we can't," Hardy tells AkronNewsNow.com. "And so, the type of thing we saw at Buchtel (Monday night) with the anonymous donor is exactly what we hoped to see."
The donor's name isn't being released, though he's described as someone with ties to the Buchtel program.
Hardy says down the road, he'd love to see the board, community members and business get together on more comprehensive ways to help improve the Akron district's athletic facilities.
"Pick up the report, build upon it and really do something much more comprehensive," Hardy says, "but we're glad to see the scoreboard and those types of donations, because it really makes a huge impact."
The scoreboard should be in place at Buchtel next year.
