One man is dead and another charged with murder following a fight that ended with gunfire at a crowded Massillon area nightclub.
It happened early Sunday morning at Hype Ultra Club on Lincoln Way East. Jerrel Johnson, 22, of Canton was shot on the dance floor and died a short time later at an area hospital.
"The outcome is definitely better than what it could have been," said Perry Township Police Chief Michael Pomesky. "There was a very large amount of people inside the club when everything transpired. There were a lot of other things that could have went wrong that didn't."
Police made an arrest within 16 hours of the incident. Dominique Williams, 22, turned himself in at the police station last night. He's being held in the Stark County Jail on a count of murder.
The club has been open as Hype Ultra Club just a few months and Pomesky says it's not the first time police have been called there.
"We've had a couple of instances pop on the radar with this club," said Pomesky. "We're currently looking at evaluating the club at this point. The owners have been very cooperative with us throughout the entire case."
Despite making an arrest, Pomesky says police are still investigating, but he does not expect to make more arrests.
