A new makeup company has launched its first line of products developed, manufactured and packaged in Akron.

GlamNatural is banking that its six ingredient formula is unique enough to make waves in the cosmetics industry. The only chemical added to its foundations, lip moisturizers and blushes is for color and it's food grade level, meaning it's safe enough to eat.

The patent-pending formula for the natural makeup blend begins with a shea butter base and is then whipped together with Kitchen Aid-type blenders at its Akron Business Accelerator. GlamNatural joined the complex off of Main Street in January of 2011. It has since grown into a larger office where it can manufacture, package and ship makeup to customers.

"There are so many resources that are on these nine floors that we take advantage of that we would not have necessarily found any other way," Christine Vadala said, co-founder of GlamNatural.

Bill Martheler brings more than 26 years of experience as a formulating cosmetic chemist to the start up business. He says it's important to examine the listed ingredients on cosmetic labels, as many contain water or chemical fillers. Martheler says some chemicals often used, can also be found in some dry cleaning fluids.

"Water is a filler, and because you use water, you have to use a preservative cause bacteria grows in water," he said.

The GlamNatural makeup mixture can be used to create multiple products.

"We can make a foundation, we can make a blush, we can make a lip, we can make a corrector and they're all based off the same base, so they're all blendable and compatible," Martheler said.

According to Martheler, the electricity usage to blend the makeup is minimal and assembly is done by hand. If GlamNatural's demand grows to where more hands are needed, he says it would be easy to add additional workers to package products.

GlamNatural has partnered with MC Hair Consultants in Cuyahoga Falls to begin selling the makeup. Customers have the opportunity to test items before purchase at the local salon or they may order products online.

GlamNatural's makeup comes with a body safe promise that its hypo-allergenic, vegan, gluten free, etc. Vadala says they're already working on recipes for mascara and a skincare line.
