North Canton natives have been telling police they've been spotting a large cat on or near their homes.
North Canton Police Chief Stephan Wilder says there's been three confirmed sightings from concerned residents.
"Within the last few days, we've had three separate residents reporting sightings of a large cat-like animal resembling a cougar or a mountain lion around their residences," Wilder said.
It is unknown how the cat got to North Canton, according to police.
The first sighting came from a woman who says she saw a large cat running across the street on Fifth Street NW July 25.
Last Saturday a couple walking through the Nature Trail said they saw a tan cat the size of a German Shepherd. Wilder says an officer went out to investigate. Monday, residents reported seeing and hearing a cat- like animal walk through their back yard.
The police department has forwarded information on the big cat to the ODNR Wildlife Officer serving Stark County.
Wilder said people should exercise caution if they come across the animal.
"We want people to keep their distance and report their sighting to use as soon as possible."
