Akron area doctors are doing their part to try and help those who can't afford to pay their medical bills.
The Summit County Medical Society has launched a new web site to help uninsured patients and others with inadequate health care coverage find less expensive or even free health care.
Dr. Doug Lefton of Fairlawn Family Practice tells AkronNewsNow " There are more and more people who can't afford their medical bills, more and more people without insurance, and more and more people with insurance that has very high deductibles that make it very hard for them to afford their care."
Lefton says the site (helpwithmedicalcosts.com) can help patients find everything from medicaid to the hospital care assurance program, which allows them to get hospital care, if they meet certain financial guidelines, for free.
"We see the patients all the time who can't afford the tests we'd like to order for them, can't afford the care we'd like to order for them. It's really sort of heartbreaking when you have people who are spending their last pennies on medical care that sometimes can be much more expensive than it has to be," says Lefton.
Dr. Lefton is hoping other area medical organizations will sign on with the web site to help with its operating costs.
