A major area plastics manufacturer is moving down the road to a new headquarters next year.
A. Schulman broke ground Wednesday at the location where its new headquarters will be located - still in Fairlawn, at the corner of Cleveland-Massillon Road and Ridgewood Road.
"The current building that we have on Market Street is inadequate for our needs," Joe Gingo, chairman, CEO and president of A. Schulman tells AkronNewsNow. "The building was built in 1977, and the renovations would be way more expensive than building a new building for us."
Gingo says that developer Landridge Development will build, and then lease the new corporate and U.S. headquarters building to his company.
Landridge will then buy and lease out the West Market Street building to new tenants.
Gingo says there's a reason the U.S. and corporate headquarters portions of the new building will be separated by an atrium.
"My corporate officers have to worry about the world. That's their job. Their job's the world, it's not the U.S.A.," Gingo explains to AkronNewsNow.com. "The U.S.A has to focus on the U.S.A. without interference from the corporate offices."
Gingo says only about 15 percent of his company's business is in the United States.
There will be shared conference rooms in that part of the building, and a place to bring in food.
Over 140 workers, including some relocated from the company's operations in Akron and Sharon Center, will call the new headquarters home sometime next year.
Technical workers will move into an "innovation center" at the current A. Schulman plant on Tallmadge Avenue.
