Democratic Akron State Senator Tom Sawyer is introducing an alternative redistricting bill in the Ohio Legislature.

Senate Bill 225 says Sawyer would represent a more balanced approach to congressional redistricting than a Republican sponsored redistricting map approved by the House.

Sawyer is endorsing parts of a redistricting map submitted by an Illinois Republican state representative that keeps 79 of Ohio’s 88 counties in single congressional districts and creates  competitive races in 11 of 16 congressional districts, compared to just two in the Republican plan.

The map was one of the top entries in a non-partisan competition sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Ohio and other citizen groups.
