An elderly North Firestone Boulevard couple were sitting in their garage enjoying the sun around 8:30 this morning when they became the victims of a robbery.
Akron Police Captain Dan Zampelli says that's when a suspect with a gun approached the two 74-year olds and demands they go into their house. Once inside the house the suspect threatened to kill them if they didn't give him their jewelry and the keys to their Chrysler mini-van. The couple complied and the robber got away with the jewelry and vehicle, but not for long.
Only 20 minutes later an officer responding to an unrelated domestic violence call on Gale and Crosby Streets noticed the mini-van matching the stolen van's description in the driveway of an apartment complex on Gale. He called for back-up and arrested the suspect, 33-year old Dwand Hammett. Police recovered the stolen jewelry and van, along with the suspect's gun. Hammett is charged with aggravated robbery, kidnapping and weapons under disability.
