Qualifying races will be held on Derby Downs this weekend for the Akron Derby. That includes the local metro area of Barberton, Akron and Cuyahoga Falls. There will also be racers from the surrounding suburban communities.
A Spokesman form the Akron Derby, Jeff Iula spoke with Ray Horner Friday morning and said "alot of these kids are second, third, and fourth generation kids, i have two grand kids in the race, they are the fourth generation to be involved in this derby."
95 kids will be participating in the races, all of which will have a chance to go down the hill a minimum of four times and potentially 10 to 12 times to win the event.
The Akron Derby is one of the few chapters of the All American Soap Box Derby that has been in all 75 races and Iula says "Naturally is should be, it's the home town."
The races will be happening on Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th form 9:00am to 5:00pm. Iula invites anyone interested to come watch and cheer on the racers. "if anyone wants to come out to watch, it's free just park at the bottom of the hill" says Iula.
