Barberton is inching their way closer to placing a five-year, 8.74-mill emergency levy on the November ballot.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that the Barberton Board of Education has passed a "resolution of necessity" Monday night that would ask the Summit County fiscal officer to determine what will be needed to create additional money to avoid a $1 million deficit by June 2013.

Treasurer Ryan Pendleton told the Beacon Journal that in order to meet the district's obligations, they will need $3.5 million in additional funding.

The board plans to vote on whether to send the levy to the Summit County Board of Elections next week.

The 8.74-mill levy could cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $268 a year.
