The University of Akron will likely become more expensive this fall.
Unlike the Kent State University Board of Trustees, which agreed Wednesday to raise tuition 3.5% and room & board 3.9%, the UA Board of Trustees hasn't taken action yet. It does, however, seem very likely, since Chief Communications Officer Eileen Korey tells AkronNewsNow in an email that the official word will probably come in June.
"An increase of 3.5% in tuition and fees is anticipated (for Board consideration in June), consistent with plans/actions at other Ohio universities," said Korey.
Korey says that in addition to state funding cuts, the university is not anticipating higher enrollment because there won't be much increase in the number of prospective traditional students and because the economy is improving. A better economy means more jobs and that prompts fewer people to turn to higher education for career preparedness.
