Akron Police believe a motorist was traveling fast when he lost control of his vehicle and ran into a tree Monday night.

The Akron Police Department reports Joseph Ahern, 36, of Akron was traveling westbound on West North Street when he lost control of his car and struck a tree around midnight.

The passenger, Jeremiah Hileman, 35, of Akron, was killed in the crash, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.

The driver was taken to Akron General Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say the driver and the passenger were not wearing seatbelts. Alcohol and speed appear to be a factor in the crash.
