We have winners -- and new records. Getachew Asfaw of Silver Springs, Maryland creamed the old record by some two minutes, in at two hours 15 minutes and 59 seconds to take the Akron Marathon -- with the second place going to Joseph Mutinda of Santa Fe, New Mexico just three seconds behind at 2:16:02.
Both shared most of the race together.
The women's race won by Ludmila Stepanova of Hebron, Kentucky with 2:39:18 run time. Jessica Odorcic of Lake County set a record in the half-marathon; the 32-year qualified for the Olympic marathon trials with her performance. Canton Native Ryan Kienzle, also competing for an Olympic trial, won the overall half-marathon record with 1:05:49.
Damon Blackford of Akron the top men's local finisher, at 2:43:47. Kent's Shanna Ailes Isnick was the top local women's finisher with a finish line crossing at the 2:53:30.
Overall, more than 17,000 runners took part in the 2013 races with 1,661 registered to run the full marathon.
