The Ohio Department of Transportation has signed off on Governor Kasich's $3-billion transportation construction bill, and that will mean greatly speeding up the schedule for major highway projects in Summit County and across the state.
One big project will be the widening of I-271 in northern Summit County. Tony Uranker of the ODOT District 4 office in Akron tells AkronNewsNow " We're going to be potentially starting that next year, and that will add a third lane from the Cuyahoga County border all the way down to State Route 8." Uranker says that should help ease the usual traffic bottlenecks that develop on I-271 usually during morning and afternoon rush hours.
Uranker says there are also plans for studying changes for the Central Interchange in Akron, including the Broadway-Main Street exchange. ODOT will begin removing five bridges near the central interchange beginning in 2015. He says that will mean several streets will end in cul de sacs. Bridges are the most expensive highway infrastructure for ODOT to maintain.
