A woman was hit by a car and killed while tryign to walk across Darrow Rd. near Eastwood Ave. in Akron Wednesday night.
The suspect drove off after hitting 58-year-old Rebecca Altuz around 9 p.m. Akron Police Lieutenant Rick Edwards says she was struck by a maroon, 1997 Chevy Blazer.. The driver of the Chevy Blazer fled the scene. Altuz was transported to Akron City Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:45pm.
A night shift traffic officer followed up on the hit skip and tracked the vehicle involved to the 2100 block of Newton Street around 2:30 Thursday morning. The driver, Jimmie D. Kirkman Jr., 67, of Newton Street admitted to driving the Chevy Blazer. Kirkman was charged with felony hit skip and booked into the Summit County Jail.
Edwards says alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash and additional charges are expected.
