Akron police say Jacob Courie, 24, and a friend were walking down East Exchange Street near Kling when an argument broke out between Courie and another man.

"A short time later a second altercation occurred between Courie and the same man. The man pulled out a shotgun and shot Jacob Courie," Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards says.

Edwards says Courie died a short time later at Akron General Medical Center.

Courie's roommate was devastated when he heard the news. Kevin Baughman said Courie was "an honorable and responsible man." Baughman finds it  ironic his roommate was in the middle of a war zone and survived only to return home for a few days and be killed. "Some useless person has to go and do this. He had to be a coward to do something like this."

The suspect is a black man, between the ages of 30 and 50, 5' 9" to 6-feet tall and weighing 160-180 pounds with a thin beard and goatee.
The University of Akron sent a text message to students and employees just after 1:00 a.m. that also said a black man was seen running southbound from the area.

The text message also asked anybody who sees suspicious activity to call Akron police.

The investigation continues.

He survives a war zone, but cannot survive Akron where crooks are now going out with shotguns. That is very sad. May he rest in peace.

Im praying for the Soldier and his family. Akron indeed is a very dangerous place to be day or night. This is the second soldier shot and not too far apart proximity.

Time to bring in the National Guard and do a street sweep throughout Akron.

One more thing about this...With the University being as big as it is..it should be a whole lot safer. Our children are being raised here. There is alot of drugs in this area and they are easily attainable. I say close the bars and put foot patrolman on every street.

Our sympathies to the family and friends of this young man. Such a shame that he died this way. Anyone with any information should come forward and turn him in... who knows his next victim may be someone you love.

This is indeed tragic. Isn't the University and the City trying to make this area into a hip place to live. They wanted Funky and Artsy but I find it Gunsy Knivesy.

@RichardCranium I'm all for that idea too! Bring on the National Guard and declare Martial Law. Set a curfew. In fact, maybe we should hang our flags upside down.
