AUDIO APS Honors Volunteers

The volunteer banquet for the Akron Public Schools took time to acknowledge those who dedicate their free hours to bettering the lives of students in the district.

The 18th annual banquet was held at the Greek Community Center with hundreds people in attendance, such as current school board members, community leaders, and most importantly, the volunteers who made the evening possible.
 
John Stanley of the East High School Alumni Association discusses what the banquet means for those who dedicate their time and effort.
 
"I think it's excellent to recognize those who give their time and effort to the students," Stanley said.
 
"It's them who will be our leaders in the future and by investing in them, we're investing in our community."

The event, which is in its 18th year, recognizes those who have gone above and beyond in their
involvement and contributions.

Candidates are nominated by APS personnel in the categories of business, civic organization, individual, PTA and senior citizen.

Fellow volunteer Chuck Malivuk says that the APS does a nice job of appreciating its many selfless individuals.
 
"It's nice to be appreciated for what it is that you do," he said.
 
Judging for the volunteer award is based on a variety of criteria including longevity, support of the district in which they work, and enhancement of parents and the the community's involvement with the schools.
 
Niel McNiel says that he was thankful for the opportunity to give back to the APS.
 
"We're all very humbled with all of this," he said. "There are many great people being honored here and I'm pleased to be associated with them"
