AUDIO Summit County Sewer Ordeal
 3/11/2010 4:08:59 PM  |  Tina Kaufmann, AkronNewsNow.com

Taking away $10 million worth of proposed funding is what the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District is threatening, after Summit County filed a lawsuit against them challenging their authority to oversee local storm water issues.

"There are a number of projects in Hudson, Springfield Township, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls and in Twinsburg where it's now in question whether we should be sponsoring anything because Summit County believes that we have no authority to do storm water and these are, in fact, storm water projects. So we're kinda caught in between here as to what they want," says NEORSD Executive Director Julius Ciaccia.

But Summit County Executive Russ Pry says NEORSD marched ahead without having any dialogue with the county until after the suit was filed.

"Now these issues come up about trying to get clarification in terms of their planning and moving forward, in terms of what they were going to do. Those never seemed to be important to the sewer district."

Pry says they are looking elsewhere for sponsorship to be safe

Summit County is looking for other program sponsors to work with the loan applications, including the City of Akron. The city may look at borrowing substantial money as a potential program sponsor because they would get a break on the interest rate.
