Bowling Alleys Want Video Slots, Too

Ohio bowling centers are arguing they should be allowed to offer video slot machines, too, if the state's horse racing tracks get them.

Bowling alley representatives made their case Wednesday before an Ohio House panel that's considering legislation to pave the way for slots at seven horse tracks.

Joseph Gambish owns a bowling center in the Cleveland suburb of Amherst and told the lawmakers slots would help the alleys survive.

The committee's chairman, Rep. Ron Gerberry, indicated he was agreeable to the idea.

An official with Concerned Women for America of Ohio testified that slots would foster addictive behavior.

An organization called LetOhioVote.org is trying to put an issue on the fall ballot that would let voters have a say on slots.

Some ancient Greek fellow named Hesiod was one of the first to tell the story of Pandora, and the evils that most curious of women unleashed when she could not resist seeing what was in that jar. After she opened the jar, all sorts of evils instantly jumped out and visited their nastiness on mankind. But, alas, the greatest evil of all stayed in the jar, layed low, and snuck out later. That penultimate evil was hope.
Hope, a quality that drives us to labor ceaselessly and futiley for a vision that will never become reality. I think that gambling as a solution for our money problems is an example of the downside of hope.
