AUDIO Coventry Schools Talks Cuts
 3/9/2010 12:38:58 PM  |  Tina Kaufmann, AkronNewsNow.com

Coventry Local Schools will be hosting a community meeting Tuesday night to present a list of cuts if a 6.25 mill emergency levy is defeated in May.

Cuts include 17 teaching positions if the levy fails. "Mainly elementary and middle school music, physical education, art and health. We'll also consider eliminating middle school sports. And the other big issue is going to statewide minimum busing," says Superintendent Russell Chaboudy.

He explains the district has done everything it could before resulting to such drastic news. In the past, Coventry went to cluster busing, cut custodians, secretaries, two teachers last year and four administrators over the past two years. And in 2009, all staff members took a pay freeze, Chaboudy explains.

The problem, Chaboudy says, is with state funding being based on property values. Coventry has been identified as a wealthy district because of its lake front property.

"The reality is though, that the majority of our houses are $75,000 or less and yet we're classified as a 'high' district. As a matter of fact, we get state less funding than places like Green and Hudson in Summit County," says Chaboudy.

The levy those in the district will see in May is a result of a failed November levy in a smaller amount. "That resulted in losing another year of tax collection...we're in a position where we have not asked for new money since 2003 and we're just at the point now where we just need to move forward."

The meeting kicks off at 7:00 p.m. at Coventry High School. Those in attendance will be able to respond using wireless technology. Chaboudy expects 200-300 people to attend.
