AUDIO Father Wants APS Cell Phone Policy Change
 2/9/2010 12:54:33 AM  |  Larry States, AkronNewsNow.com

The father of a sixth grade student at Goodyear Middle School wants the Akron School Board to change its cell phone policy involving students.

Currently the Board policy is to confiscate any phone brought into a classroom by a student and hold it for 24 hours before releasing it. Darrel Marks II telling the Board at its Monday night meeting that students should be allowed to carry their cell phones, if they are not using them needlessly or to text in class. " I find it needs to be addressed, at least to allow them to have it on their person. I'm not saying that they have to have it on, but at least have it on their person in case of an emergency situation. There are things that come around."

Marks says more families are relying only on cell phones for family communication, and not land line phones. "Right now that's my only way of getting a hold of my daughter and her to get in contact with me, to let me know that everything went Ok for that day. Same somebody's going to try and beat her up, that's the only way she has to contact me says Marks. He says he wants his daughter to be able to contact him or his wife if she should encounter a problem in school.

Darrel Marks says he has no problem with rules prohibiting making calls or texting during class. He just thinks the Board should change its policy to allow students to at least carry their phones so they can contact parents after class to let them know if they're OK. Marks says "They can turn it on, have it on vibrate, or no volume. The policy needs to be addressed. In this day and age people can do just about anything to kids."

Superintendent David James says he'll take the request under consideration and give his reply.

okay, i do not see why a student needs a cell phone in class...if they need to call their parents after every class to say that they are OK, then well, i dunno what to say....if they have a problem being picked on, they need to report to the office and if they are scared, talk to the parents after school....

i do not think that the school should hold a confiscated cell phone 24 hours though....give it to the student after school the first time with a note to the parents or call the parents and the second time, only give it back to a parent in person.....

kids are forced to grow up far too early these days and i think having a cell phone on them so they can constantly be 'connected' is a little ridiculous....that'll happen soon enough! and really, how many kids wouldn't keep looking at the phone?

Agreed misstia. There is no good reason a child needs a cell phone on their person during classtime. With picture phones and iPhones, it's very easy to take a picture of the test in 1st period, and send it to a friend who takes the test later in the day. Not to mention the constant texting and other distractions that come with normal cell phone usage.

Telling a child to keep the phone in their locker is reasonable. They can check it between classes if need be, and have it to stay in touch with a parent once school is out.

During classtime though, if a student needs to get in touch with a parent or vice versa - walk on down to the office like we all had to do.

David James just announced the end of "Zero Tolerance" during last week's State of the Schools speech.

I hope Mr. James lives up to his word to "take the request under consideration and give his reply" to this father's seemingly reasonable modification to the cell phone policy.

@ Wayne In Akron - What middle or high schooler do you know, who will NOT play with their cell phone if they have it on them? They will be checking it constantly!

And if you're a parent in Akron you know that APS now has a system that can call every parent in the district at once for school closings, delays, and other updates. It's an annoying system, as it has a habit of calling you more than once for the same thing, but it at least gives the ability to get in touch with parents immediately should something occur.

There is no need for a child to have a cell phone on their person all day in school. No reason at all.

I agree with misstia, citizen, forcedinakron. Cell phones do NOT belong in school. Just like when I was in school,we were told that our transister radio was not allowed in school. And they were right! The children need to keep attention to their studies and remember just what they are in school for.

I think one pay phone in each school is enough for any important 3 minute phone call that has to be made.
Just be sure your child has coins for the phone. Thats good enough.

And if anyone is having trouble with bullies, the school office needs to know about that situation.

Students are also using cellphones in school to bully kids. If students have their cellphones on them they have a constant connection to bullies. The only way teachers now know if a student even has a cell phone on them is that the student has the phone out using it in class. If a student needs to get in touch with a parent the office has phones they just need to go there to use it. We also have a problem of kids going to the restroom to use their cellphones to do inappropriate things.
