Will Akron voters see a school levy in 2011?

Akron Pubic Schools Superintendent David James has ruled out any levy on the ballot this year, but schools treasurer Jack Pierson and others are concerned that the longer the district waits to go back to voters, the larger the levy would have to be. James, at Monday night's board meeting, tells AkronNewsNow " It's absolutely correct, the earlier you put it on, the better, but we haven't talked about reductions, either through building closures or reductions in employees, or benefit issues"

James says the future of the economy is still unpredictable and it's too early to say whether a levy would be feasible in 2011. "There are so many variables out there. The only thing you can do right now is find your worst case scenario, and that would be when stimulus goes away, and there would be some revenue holes in the budget."

He cites the number of home foreclosures in Akron saying homeowners teetering on the edge of losing their homes are not likely to vote for another levy any time soon.

David James says the district would consider more cost cutting before considering another levy, and that could include more school closings and payroll reductions

"I don't see major ones maybe right now but you know as the fiscal situation changes in the state and the country there could be some adjustment" says James.

Pierson declines to comment further on his concerns, but confirms his belief that a levy with double digit millage would be needed if the school district waits another year or to go back to the voters.

they need to keep making budget cuts! it's ridiculous they have a levy every few years....WE have to live within our budgets, so how about they do??? how about they start deciding what schools to close NOW so they don't go ahead and spend millions rebuilding a school that they'll end up closing???

get rid of a few of the principles and vice princiles in these schools. I have never known a school to need more than 1 principle-2 vice principles (depending on size of school). I cant afford another tax increase for something my children do not use. I dont want another tax increase for something that my neighbors kids do not use to their advantage.
