A former bar and nightclub that was the scene of prostitution and crime on South Street is being reduced to rubble today.

The former Whispers bar is being razed by the city after the current property owner failed to bring the building up to code. Neighbors like Kathy Wilkens,a local block club captain, gathered to watch the local eyesore being erased. She tells AkronNewsNow "We worked very hard to bring it down. These people, neighbors have had to put up with this stuff for years, and we've pushed to where you know, we got it down."

Neighbor James Harouff was another interested observer as the walls came down. " This will stop a lot of the trafficking that was going on, a whole lot of prostitution that was going around. it will clean up the neighborhood a little bit. It's really a good thing it's coming down" says Harouff.

William Huddleston once lived in an apartment above the bar where his father worked as a bartender. Huddleston says years ago the building housed a friendly neighborhood bar, and it hurts to see what it had become. He retrieved a brick from the building to remember a part of his childhood. He hopes the land can be used for green space or a memorial park.

Several other area residents said they would like the property at the corner of South and Sumner Streets turned into green space or a small park for neighborhood children.
