Pay Day In Akron Is Friday
 11/6/2009 5:54:33 PM  |  Tina Kaufmann, AkronNewsNow.com

Some Akron City workers are upset, saying they didn't get any notice their direct deposit days were going into their accounts on-time.

A city worker, who wished to remain anonymous said, "as a city employee, we're accustomed to receiving direct deposit on Thursdays, which means the funds are available to us on Thursdays, usually in the morning, even though technically, pay day is Friday."

And that's exactly what Mayor Plusquellic's office says the reminder note, the credit union e-mail and pay stub wording stated. Apparently, many people didn't get it and some have reportedly overdrafted their accounts. Plusquellic's been making sure funds are available in worker's accounts on Thursdays thru year's end, this week being an exception, because he says many employees aren't reading their memos.

Next year, city workers will again be reminded not to rely on the checks posting a day early and payday is Friday.

Hopefully they get the memo.

Read Plusquellic's complete memo to staff:

To All Employees:

The Akron Municipal Employees Credit Union distributed an e-mail yesterday regarding our city payroll. Let me once again clarify the situation with regard to our pay days.

Pay day for the City of Akron employees is Friday. It has always been Friday. In recent years, we have made wire transfers to financial institutions by Thursdays of most weeks, so the weekly pay has actually arrived one day early. It appears many of our employees have come to rely on this practice.

This week, your financial institutions learned that our transfer of payroll funds would occur on time - Friday - instead of Thursday. This is what occasioned the e-mail advisory from AMECU.

In response to employees concerns, next week and until the last week of this year, we expect to make payroll transfers by Thursday. (As for Thanksgiving, the payroll transfer will be made by Wednesday, November 25.)

NOTICE

This e-mail will serve as notice to all employees regarding the pay date of Friday January 1, 2010. We can not deposit on Thursday. You will receive a pay check or a direct deposit on Friday, January 1.

Please plan accordingly for this change.

If you have questions about the city's policies regarding payroll, you may direct them to me for a response.

My husband worked for Akron for over 30 years. Payday was ALWAYS Friday. Yes, those who had direct deposit saw their check go into their account on Thursday, but were told funds would NOT be available until FRIDAY. Why should those who choose to use direct deposit be allowed to use their money a day early? Payday is FRIDAY - period!!!

here is a easy way to handle the problem, save 1 weeks pay and put it in a extra savings account so you dont have to live week to week. that way if you do over draw for some reason you always have back up. most banks will transfer the funds if the checking account taps out. just make sure you put the money back in as soon as you can.

Wouldn't it have been less controversial, less expensive for those trying to survive during these economic times, and less drama overall if this memo had gone out last week? Would it have hurt anything to "remind" folks that payday is Friday, in spite of a long history of Thursday direct depositing, before actually making the "correction" to the procedure? After all, we aren't talking trash pick up being changed or the Christmas market being cancelled, we're talking financial hardship for the Akron taxpayer. There was actually better notice given about the Christmas market and community centers being effected by the budget crisis. We're talking common curtesy here, not Homeland Security issues. Instead of scrambling to explain the "already happened", why not scramble to warn of the "pending change". I'm just sayin'.

And kudos to you, LIMIT2HIGH, for being able to put a weeks pay aside for emergencies during these times. There would probably be a lot less foreclosed and empty homes around Akron if we were all as lucky financially as you.

Thanks momo you siad it.just remember it is all about them. Being the city is so broke, keeping there workers checks another day for interest equals so good $$$. But it will pay for the city scape magazine we cancelled due to financial hardship remember that!! Oh yeah mine came in the mail yesterday, no worries I am giving it back to them via the blus trash bin!!!
