Police Auditor Goes Part Time

Akron's police auditor will soon become a part time employee.

That's according to Dave Lieberth, Chief of Staff for Mayor Don Plusquellic.  Lieberth says Police Auditor Phillip Young will begin working a 20-hour week November 15th.

"The reduction is solely because of our budget situation," said Lieberth.

Young's secretary opted to participate in the city's Voluntary Separation Plan, further reducing expenses related to the police auditor.  Lieberth says the reduction is similar to cuts absorbed in other departments.

Although some people have questioned the exact role of the police auditor, Plusquellic stated at the time that the position would be tasked, in part, with:
  • Community outreach
  • Making policy recommendations
  • Dealing with complaints about law enforcement personnel
Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 President Paul Hlynsky and City Council President President Marco Sommerville were both critical of the move.  Sommerville didn't like the way the job description was written.  Hlynsky - two years ago - said he liked Young, but that nobody should have been hired until the role was more clearly defined.

The reduction in hours is not to be seen as a way of back-pedalling on the need for the position, according to Lieberth.  He says the mayor stands behind the job.

Young began the job about two years ago at a salary of $60,000.

As a "part-timer", does he lose his benefits? That will save as much money for the budget and taxpayers as his salary reduction does.

Even Mr Hlysky and Mr Sommerville were scratching their heads at this one-
