AUDIO Less Akron Cash, More After School Program Help
 11/2/2009 10:50:45 PM  |  Mike Ward, AkronNewsNow.com

The City of Akron is getting more "bang for its buck" when it comes to helping Akron's after school programs.

City council on Monday approved a 180-thousand dollar city contribution to the programs. That's 150-thousand dollars less than last year.

But city council member Tina Merlitti says one move in particular helped expand the after school program... a merger with the Butch Reynolds after school program.

And the city's 2009 contribution of $150,000 helped get a $2.2 million dollar matching grant...fueling an expansion from 11 to 27 schools.

Merlitti says the U.S. Department of Education is spotlighting the Akron after school program as one of two examples of programs that work - and that the program will be shown on the department's website as a model for other communitiies.

Id rather see them discontinue the after school programs and make the schools better equipped with updated books and materials, allotted money for field trips and classroom supplies. Instead of after school programs, extend the school hour. I dont know about anyone else but I dont need an after school babysitter, nor do I wish to sign any paperwork from jobs and family services asking my household business and income just so my kid can do crafts and learn spanish.

yeah, i don't get the afterschool program...it's basically babysitting and why should the school be doing that for free? and i've heard that complaint before missfit-about filling out paperwork for jobs and family services...

Well, folks...you like eating at McDonald's & Burger King & Pizza Hut...and you like shopping at Walmart's & Walgreens, eh? Do you actually think the folks working there who have kids can afford 'day care'?

Um...do you lack the cognizance to have read but not recognized the part about a "$2.2 million dollar matching grant" in the description of the finances involved?
