Keeping Halloween Activities Safe
 10/28/2009 9:55:53 AM  |  Ryan Haidet, AkronNewsNow.com

Trick-Or-Treating should be all about fun. To make sure it stays that way, the American Red Cross has some ideas that might help make Halloween a safe experience.

When it comes to costumes, officials suggest wearing makeup instead of masks.  That way there is no risk of vision obstructions.

Also be sure to wear a flame-resistant costume with reflective tape attached to it and any Trick-Or-Treat bags.  Light-colored clothing is also strongly suggested.

Plan ahead and know the route your children will be taking.  Even better, go around the neighborhood with them.

When the gathering of goodies is complete, be sure to inspect all the treats to check for choking hazards and tampering.  Officials advise to throw out any candy that is unwrapped.

More Halloween safety tips:
  • Visit only the homes that have a porch light on.  Accept treats at the door -- never go inside.
  • If you are welcoming ghosts and goblins, make sure your outdoor lights are on.
  • Walk only on the sidewalks, not in the streets.  If there is no sidewalk available, walk at the edge of the roadway facing traffic.  Look both ways before crossing the street, and cross only at the corner.  Don't cut across yards or use alleys.  Don't cross between parked cars.
  • Be cautious around strange animals, especially dogs.
  • Sweep leaves from your sidewalks and steps.
  • Clear your porch or front yard of any obstacles that a child could trip over.
  • Restrain your pets.
  • Use a glow stick instead of a candle in your jack-o'-lantern to avoid a fire hazard.
