Flu Fears & Trick-Or-Treating 10/30/2009 12:57:48 AM | Ryan Haidet, AkronNewsNow.com "Trick-Or-Treat." The excited phrase pouring from children every Halloween season will hopefully not be accompanied by sniffles, coughs and sneezes this year. advertisement With fears of the H1N1 flu virus spreading across the country, the American Red Cross has suggestions for little ghouls and goblins to consider while gathering Halloween candy. "We don't want anyone to go out Trick-Or-Treating and come home sick," says Sharon Stanley, Chief Nurse of the American Red Cross. "You can follow these special tips to try to have a flu-free Halloween." First of all, and probably the most obvious, if your little Trick-Or-Treater is sick, simply keep them at home. Even though this will be a disappointing decision for the child, your neighbors and community will be thankful. It's also a great idea to remind children to keep their hands away from their eyes, nose and mouth while Trick-Or-Treating (as in any time) in an effort to keep any germs away. In addition to taking along a flashlight, officials suggest giving children a small container of hand sanitizer to carry along.
Finally, for those of you on the other side of the door passing out candy, officials with the Red Cross advise you hand it or scoop it out. This will keep the hundreds of little Trick-Or-Treaters' hands from reaching into a big bowl.
